Huge bookshop with lovely cafe tucked away at the back - creaky floorboards and aisles of books all add to the wonderful atmosphere.
Fantastic range of books, old and new. Upstairs and downstairs. There is a reading area and a cafe there as well.
In all honesty, I visited Hay-on-wye, largely to visit this place and I must say I wasn't disappointed at all! In fact it outlived my expectations! There are so many books that the first feeling is that of being overwhelmed. But once you get over that, you realise you need not a few hours but two days at least to go through each aisle and everything they offer! It's not what you'd call a second hand bookshop in terms of prices, don't be mistaken, they do sell new books as well as old first editions and leather bound book editions etc and hence it's not cheap. It is on the pricier end of a bookshop. There's a hidden gem of books in the basement which most people forget to visit. There's also a cafe serving absolutely fantastic pancakes at the far end of the cafe! The fries/chips and the pancakes saved my day as vegetarian person! My partner loved them so much that he ordered a second plate for himself! The staff is very kind and thoughtful as well! The leather chairs are comfy, so go there with time on your hands to make yourself comfy in those chairs to indulge with a book of your choice! PS they also sell amazing cards, journals and notebooks!
Richard Booths bookshop as the suggests was originally owned by the gentleman who turned Hay on Wye into the book town it is today. The original wooden wall panelling and shelving holds an enormous range of books for everyone. It is spread out over two floors. There is now an excellent cafe at the rear of the building serving light lunches and snacks. Great chips if you like them crispy.
Fantastic large, well stocked bookshop filled with both second hand and up to date new releases. Comprehensive sections ....like the best kind of old style library. Very atmospheric with lots of browsing room and comfy old chairs to sink into. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Also a very good cafe style restaurant, a little pricey though.
